penile prosthesis,

WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

Penile prostheses are medical devices that are surgically implanted into the penis to treat severe erectile dysfunction (ED). Inflatable and malleable prostheses are available. Inflatable prostheses use a pump to create an erection, while malleable prostheses are manually bent to achieve an erection.

PENILE PROSTHESIS

A penile prosthesis, also known as a penile implant, is a medical device used to treat severe erectile dysfunction or impotence in men who do not respond adequately to other less invasive treatments, such as medications or therapies.

There are two main types of penile prostheses:

  1. Inflatable penile prosthesis: This type of prosthesis consists of two cylinders that are implanted in the corpora cavernosa of the penis, which are the structures responsible for erection. In addition, there is a pump located in the scrotum (bag containing the testicles) and a fluid reservoir in the abdomen. To achieve an erection, the patient squeezes the pump manually, which transfers the fluid from the reservoir to the inside of the cylinders, inflating them and creating an artificial erection. Once the sexual act is over, the fluid can be released back into the reservoir, allowing the penis to return to a flaccid state.

The placement of a penile prosthesis is a surgical procedure usually performed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the penis or surrounding area to insert the prosthesis components. After surgery, a recovery period will be required before the patient can use the prosthesis for sexual intercourse.
